To modernize or not to modernize: That is the question

Technological innovation, more aware and actively engaged customers, and new regulatory and policy directives, are changing the business and economic environment in which utilities operate. Climate change and environmental drivers and regulations are now entering a new era of even greater uncertainty and regulatory shifts given recent changes in Washington, D.C. The new Administration has been working to reprioritize the U.S. Department of Energy’s budget and streamlining U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Add to this the need to update and modernize an aging transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure and legacy information technology and operations technology (IT/OT) systems and utilities are besieged with requests and demands to transform and adapt, and to do it quickly.
