With growing IT and OT interconnectivity, the utility needed a way to quickly isolate critical systems if a cyberattack compromised IT or external networks. West Monroe brought deep energy industry expertise and a hands-on approach to developing a resilient solution.

We mapped network architecture, identified key isolation points, and designed precise procedures for both manual and automated system disconnection. By balancing technology with governance, we ensured the utility could isolate threats effectively—minimizing business disruption and maintaining operational integrity.

Creating the right procedures was just the first step—we also ensured they worked in real-world scenarios. We partnered with IT and business leaders to define decision-making authority, test procedures, and refine them based on live results.

We engaged more than 200 employees across multiple locations with hands-on training, ensuring teams knew exactly how to isolate systems in a crisis. We ran walkthroughs and live off-hour exercises to simulate cyber breaches, testing both manual and push-button isolation. In the end, the utility had confidence in its ability to respond both quickly and effectively.

With new isolation capabilities in place, the utility can now respond to cyber threats 90% faster. This means a reduced chance of system infiltration, minimizing downtime and financial loss. The project also introduced push-button automation, streamlining response efforts across 60+ critical processes.

Beyond technical improvements, this effort created lasting operational resilience. Employees are well-trained, governance is clearly defined, and decision-making is structured for rapid action. By combining technology, process, and collaboration, we helped the utility strengthen its defenses—ensuring they are ready to act when the next cyber threat emerges.
