Do Not Let Your Circuit Migrations Become a Circus

Tuesday, June 17 | 4:00-5:00 pm

When utilities transition from a legacy transport system to a modern transport system, they need to ensure that they have planned out the circuit migrations. Replacing a SONET system that has evolved over decades with a modern system such as MPLS can be challenging enough but the details needed for a smooth circuit migration can seem to be daunting task without a comprehensive plan.

In this presentation we will discuss how PG&E planned out a multiyear circuit migration program that ensured that critical data such as SCADA and Protective Relaying were migrated from a legacy SONET system to a modern MPLS system without losing reliability and resiliency.

Enhancing Resilience and Connectivity: Modernizing PG&E’s Fiber Optic Network

Wednesday, June 18 | 8:30-9:30 am

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) is undertaking a transformation project to replace and mitigate risks associated with its aging optical ground wire (OPGW) and all-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) fiber optic cable network, with a dual focus on enhancing network resilience and expanding connectivity. This presentation will detail the innovative strategies employed to achieve these goals while ensuring reliable service and meeting the growing demands of a modern utility network.

PG&E has implemented thorough evaluations of variance route options and new construction techniques, including using third-party fiber agreements, underground and overhead electric assets, and micro-trenching. PG&E’s approach leverages advanced decision-making tools and a cross-functional approach to assess these options against multiple criteria such as cost, risk exposure, and environmental impact. The presentation will also highlight how expanding network connectivity serves as a key driver, supporting operational efficiency and broader strategic goals.
