Delivering a detailed AMI engagement plan to win regulatory approval and drive customer adoption

Con Edison aimed to secure regulatory approval for its ambitious AMI program within a tight timeline. West Monroe began by facilitating collaboration sessions with 26 external stakeholders, including elected officials, advocacy groups, and customers. These discussions surfaced key concerns about privacy, data sharing, and community impacts. Using these insights, we worked with Con Edison to develop a comprehensive engagement plan that included communication strategies, privacy planning, and compliance with regulatory requirements. This groundwork ensured alignment across diverse groups and set the stage for an effective AMI rollout.
With input from 26 stakeholders in hand, West Monroe collaborated closely with Con Edison to build an engagement plan that addressed regulatory needs and community priorities. Together, we outlined clear strategies for communicating AMI benefits, ensuring privacy through adherence to OECD principles, and fostering trust among customers. The team worked iteratively to refine the plan while facilitating public collaboration meetings to maintain transparency. This approach ensured the plan not only met but exceeded regulatory expectations, paving the way for a smooth deployment of 5 million smart meters across New York.
The comprehensive and stakeholder-informed engagement plan drove tangible results. Con Edison received swift regulatory approval and quickly moved to deploy 2.5 million smart meters by the end of 2019. On track to install 5 million meters by 2022, the program is already transforming how customers manage energy use. By meeting 100% of regulatory requirements and addressing community concerns, the plan minimized risks and strengthened customer relationships. This milestone in energy infrastructure modernization empowers Con Edison to deliver better outcomes for its customers.
