City-wide recycling
Announcing city-wide recycling of cardboard, paper and plasticsWhat is the number one material in municipal solid waste stream? Some might say plastics, but look around. Are the morning newspaper, cereal boxes, stacks of mail, napkins, and tiny packages of sweetener sharing the space? At the office there will most likely be a handful of phone messages, notepads, calendars, business cards, sticky notes, invoices, purchase orders, and telephone books awaiting attention. Paper is everywhere!
The Environmental Protection Agency reports that at about 35 percent, paper and paperboard products constitute the largest portion of the municipal solid waste stream. Meaning, paper is the number one material that is thrown away. For every 100 pounds of trash thrown away, 35 pounds is paper. Most recovered paper is recycled. The EPA information states that eighty-one percent of the paper recovered in the United States is recycled by US paper mills; 16 percent is exported to foreign markets; and the rest is used domestically to manufacture products like molded packaging, compost, and kitty litter.
The City of West Monroe is partnering with Recycling Services, LLC to help its citizens go green by recycling paper and plastics. “We will be placing units for recycling paper and plastics in two new locations in West Monroe. Residents can bring their paper and plastic to Brady Ball Field on White’s Ferry Road, or to the West Monroe Community Center on South 5th Street” said Mayor Dave Norris. There is also a paper only unit at the McMillan branch of the Ouachita Public library.
City offices plan to lead by example. Each department will be recycling the office paper, cardboard and plastics generated from their office.
